The American Music Fairness Act, first introduced in the House of Representatives in 2021, has recently been brought to discussion in the United States Senate.
The goal of this bill is to require major broadcasters to pay performance royalties for sound recordings and to establish a flat fee system for smaller radio stations.
Senators Alex Padilla and Marsha Blackburn introduced this bipartisan bill in the Senate, with support from musicFirst, SoundExchange, the RIAA, A2IM, and The Recording Academy.
However, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has strongly opposed this bill, as well as the Local Radio Freedom Act, aiming to avoid paying royalties for radio broadcasts.
