IS VOTING A RIGHT BEING DENIED? ITALY’S FORGOTTEN VOTERS

The rock band THE SUN – sensitive to issues such as peace, solidarity, and the environment – has spoken out on the impossibility of going to the polling station they belong to, manifested by students and out-of-town workers on the occasion of the forthcoming elections on 25 September: the situation involves 5 million citizens who, by renouncing their right to vote, will favour a phenomenon that is too widespread in our country, abstentionism. ‘We cannot suffer in silence the situation that is being created,’ denounces Francesco Lorenzi. ‘Voting is the greatest form of democracy, an achievement that has required a long, tortuous, at times very painful journey that has involved entire generations before us. The possibility of exercising this right is for us a great value that we feel as a duty’.

To fix this unacceptable situation, Italy should follow the example of most European countries and offer at least two days for voting. It’s essential to reduce voter abstention by providing every possible opportunity and method for people to cast their vote.
